In celebration of my abscessed tooth and the waiting time to have it repaired I bought myself a bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old. I am looking forward to trying it when my pain gets down to a level that actually will allow me taste.g()fy

A window of painlessness opportunity!
One of the most pleasant noses of the Rums I have tried smooth and slightly sweet, I am surprised by how light this rum is based on the nose alone.
More alcohol burn then I suspected too, but very nice. A inviting warm, not a burning one. Complex flavour that is a bit hidden behind its sweetness.
Glad I bought this one, it fits nicely into my number 3 spot of Rums that I have tried. A keeper!
EDIT) This one is really growing on me. Much more complex then I originally gave it credit for. Make this one tied for second place on my limited Rum list!cheers.gif

It will be interesting to see how your perception of that rum changes as your pain subsides and the bottle is drunk.

The bottle will have to wait until the pain subsides. I suspect I will enjoy it even more! One more finger can't hurt tho....

I am doing a head to head with Appleton Estate Reserve against Mt.Gay Extra old.
I am surprised how much smoother this Appleton's is as I recall not enjoying it all that much. I do like the flavour style of the Extra old slightly better, but I obviously underrated the Appleton's first time around, by quite a bit. I think I better try the "Extra".
I have a friend going to Jamaica. Would it be worth while getting "Masters blend" there? I can get it for 90.00 here on the Island.
Is there a very dark rum worth bring back from Jamaica? (Think Black seal like)

Stephen, my personal preference is the Reserve over the Extra, but the MBL is a big step up in quality if you can afford it, one of the best rums available by a long way, the heart is a 30 year old rum, say no more. Mount Gay XO is also one of my favourites, but seems to have changed a little recently or maybe my tastes have. Either way you are tasting some of the best rums available from two of the oldest rum companies in the world. Quality takes time and experience, something that cannot be replicated by any startup company.

I'm a big fan of the MGXO...it doesn't get much better. No matter how much you stray, I come home to it.
Now...concerning the Appleton rums. I actually prefer the Extra over the Reserve...IMHO, it is not close. Now...I drink most of my rum straight - so that could be a factor.
If you have a chance to get the MBL....(in my Arnold voice)....DO IT! DO IT NOW!
Also, if you are loving the Appleton lines, you need to go for the 21 year as well.
I haven't done a MBL and 21 Year side-by-side yet...but I look forward to the day.
A rum like Black Seal....hmmmm, I hear a lot of people stalk about Coruba rum. I haven't had it, but it seems to get good press. It is a dark rum and is often paired against Meyers's.
I recently bought a bottle of Smith and Cross "Navy Style" rum...and to quote Joe Biden..."It is an F'ing big deal"!!! Get your hands on that if you can!
Enjoy the ride!

I drink all my rums straight up.
I will go get the MBL based on what our experienced members have told me, thank-you! The 21 year old at 150.00 will have to wait, I drew a line at 100.00 for a bottle for now. I will get the "extra" too as I have tired and revised my opinion of the "reserve".
I think I might pick up El Dorado's 15 year old. ( anyone have feed back on it?)

ED15 is one of my all-time favorite. More complex than ED12. Maybe you can start with younger ED and if you like the profile climb up the ladder.
Since we're talking MGXO, a new bottle (same rum I think) was introduced in the US with a higher price. Can we assume that the bottle we know in Canada is phasing out and that we should stock up? I was thinking about that yesterday while buying a bottle in Ottawa. Maybe I should keep one unopened as a collection item.

Perhaps that is why it is on sale right now here in BC? Getting rid of the "old stock"?
It's about a year since I first heard talk of the new bottle, and in the MLCC stores it is still the old bottle at the old price. I'm quite pleased, and will likely get a couple more soon.

It's funny, the Mount Gay marketing department obviously thinks the new bottle design will improve sales. But for me its just the opposite. I am so afraid the new bottle will contain a changed (and not in a good way) spirit, that I am now hoarding my remaining bottle of the old, and not drinking it as often.

I have been buying several bottles each time I cruise. It has been about $16 US a litre but the last time it was now about $24 in new packaging and bottle. I did buy the new bottle last Feb in St. Martin for $17 but now the increase is about 50%. The new bottle doesn't improve the taste.

I don't know about the old bottle, but the Mount Gay XO I tried last weekend was a very decent rum for the kind of money you have to spend here, which is 31 euros - around $42,70 for 1 liter. I don't know whether the XO is sold in 1 liter bottles everywhere - converted to .75l, this would be around $32, still a lot more expensive than what you mentioned.

Flor de Cana 7 Gran Reserva: medium bodied dark gold rum; slightly fruity hints around a carmel and toffee taste, plus some old leather and cinnamon on the bask end. Just sweet enough for me without being cloyingly so.
On the MGXO I swim against the tide. Caramel candy, hints of banana (the MG signature) and pecan; medium body. Not overly assertive, with a short and unappealing finish; almost like a cognac or dry whisky. Not my thing (but others loudly disagree, so make sure you form your own opinion).

I'm no tasting expert but the FDC7 has been added to the many other cocktail rums of which I have too many. As a sipping rum it has no appeal. It's not that it's a bad rum, just really dull IMO.
The MGXO is a rum of which I happened to partake in last night with a little water.

I picked up a bottle of Mount Gay Extra old today for 17 dollars. I suspect it's an older bottle- It has a brown neck wrap and a brown, slightly rough plastic cap. under the plastic wrap around the cap it appears that there may not be a tamper-evident seal. It has a sticker immediately below the neck that reads World's Finest Rum Since 1703. Finally, the measurments are marked in both ML and oz, and from my experience with bourbon hunting this was only done for a short time frame after we changed from pints/quarts on bottles to ML. However, I realize that this is an imported product, so the rules may not be the same.
I googled pictures of it and found a "newer" looking style that isn't at all like this one.
Any of you guys with the older bottle out there- Does it have both ML and oz measurements marked on it?

That sounds like an early bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old. I've got some pictures of the original label that came out in 95 in Barbados, but that rum was imported to the US for a few years after that. I'll post a pic of the label once I have time to scan it again.

Mike, the bottle I found is very similar, however- yours says 750ml on the right side of the label, mine does not. On the bottom edge of your glass, is yours stamped "750ml (25.4 FL OZ)"?
Thank you for posting the picture.

No problem...
The bottom front is stamped "750ml". Underneath the bottle it is stamped "24"
