Hello Everyone,

First off, I should tell you I know ZERO about rum, so I'm going to apologize up front if my question seems stupid. Here's my story:

My wife's uncle was given a bottle of rum from a friend. He tells me it's probably about 40 to 50 years old. Here are the details:

Saint James Rum, 94 proof, 4/5 quart

He asked me if I could check eBay to see if it had any value, but eBay prohibits alcohol from their auctions.

Can someone help me give him an answer? Is the info I've given you above enough to make that determination? Is there something else on the label I should ask him to look for that can help answer this question?

Thanks everyone! :D

Judging from the volume of 4/5 quart, that bottle was destined for the US. Saint James from Martinique has been exporting for a few years but since that was probably bottled in France, due to costs, it probably isn't as good as it would be if it had been bottled in Martinique.

It is difficult to say what it's worth, but it's probably worth more as a novelty than as a bottle of rum.

A picture would help, especially one that allows people to read the label.

It's not against eBay rules to sell alcohol but the item has to meet a few conditions like the bottle being collectible. They don't allow wine sales because the value of the wine is usually more than the bottle and contents aren't supposed to be for consumption. I saw one listing that said the seller wouldn't ship to certain states because of those states regulations. I recently won a bottle of Fernandes White Star rum from Trinidad that the seller says is from the 1950's. I paid $46.76 plus shipping. I'll probably just look at it for a long time. With eBay I find if people want something bad enough they'll pay.
