Hello everyone.

I've been using this website as a rum guide for a while now, checking ratings and reviews before I buy new rums. I credit this site fully with throwing Appleton 12 year my way, and let me tell you I can't thank you enough for that. It's fast become my go-to rum.

Rum was the first alcohol I ever tried (Cpt. Morgan Spiced, naturally - the cheap rum of drunken teens everywhere) and I've been in love with it ever since. Over the last 3 years or so since then (yeah, I'm a young one) I've tried a number of rums, although nowhere near enough. My favorite sipping rums are Appleton 12 year and Pyrat XO. I rather like Cruzan Estate Dark Rum as well, though I know it's not exactly the king of rums.

I remain fond of the Captain as well. Complex it is not, but few rums compete for cheap, easily drinkable liver failure.

As far as my reasons for joining, well, there are several. I've been lifting reviews from this site long enough that I think it's only fair to start putting a few of my own in. Also, I'm slowly implementing a 10 year plan here. No, not a military coup (yet...); rather I would like to begin distilling my own rum in a few years (for personal consumption, not sale), and this site is a hotbed of raw information and informed individuals.

At the moment, I am in England, well away from my normal haunts in North Carolina. If there are any Englishmen in the audience, why, oh dear God why would you inflict Tesco West Indian Dark Rum on the world?

Well, I'm going to be randomly hopping back and forth between North Carolina, the UK, and Greece for the next 3-4 years at least, so I don't really have anywhere I can sit down and build a still at the moment. Plus I'm juuuust a little obsessive, so it's just as well that I have a few years to read, plan, and cannibalize still designs.

You pose a fine question about Tesco West Indian Dark Rum. Other supermarkets also do their own brand dark rums, all no doubt equally hideous.

I suppose those products are targeted at the considerable segment of society which values low cost over quality (i.e. bang for the buck) in their choice of alcoholic beverage. Certainly anybody who actually likes rum would avoid them.

Indeed. I think I may have decided to buy it using pretty much the same matrix to make the choice.

In retrospect I might've weighted price a bit too much...:rolleyes: I suppose that's what Coke exists for though, so it'll all work out in the end.

I have some similar tastes to your own, although I have to admit the Pyrat just hasn't sat well with me (yet). I keep trying, but it's too overwhelmingly orange for me. Anyway, I'm also a fan of the Captain and the Cruzan, although it's the Single Barrel Estate and Blackstrap that are my favorites. I'm currently enjoying a glass of Zaya neat, and I've recently been turned onto Brugal Extra Viejo and some other rums from the DR.

It is unusually strong, but the orange peel flavour is a great deal of the reason behind my love for Pyrat. It's a nice, complex rum, but has that (as you say, almost overwhelming) orange flavour. It's different, which makes it a nice change coming off of Cruzan - Single Barrel or Dark; I haven't made it to Blackstrap yet - or Appleton. I wouldn't drink it daily by any means, but it has its own special niche on my rum shelf.

Wow! Hadn't really considered that. Looking at the pictures from the various distilleries, I'm guessing that requires a bit of real estate, doesn't it? (More than I can use without getting the neighbors bent out of shape about the mess...) What's the smallest footprint anyone here has seen for a distillery?
