View Full Version : Join Me Next Wed./a drink for Haiti

So I have donated to the redcross, and even packed my wife off this morning with all excess food to give to the haitian food drive. There is another way that I think I can support Haiti as well, although it is not totally void of personal pleasure on my part.

Next Wed. Jan. 27th at 8pm EST I will be buying and cracking open a bottle of Barbancourt Reserve Speciale (8yo 5star) and posting live on this thread my impression and notes on it. I'd love it if as many of you join me. I figure this is a haitian rum that many of us can get our hands on and a live tasting might be a fitting tribute to the well wishes and hopes we all have for haiti. It might also in some small way promote a haitian product so that when trade does resume, more product will be purchased, and more money will be flowing into haiti.

I intend to do this regardless, and if you can join me great, if not, no worries.

Sounds like fun, I'll mark that down and try to join in as I just purchased a bottle of that myself.

I chose the bottle for the same reason, I thought people would think it was silly but I figured if I was going to buy a bottle it might as well be a Haitian rum to show support.

What a great idea RonJames.

I'm going to have to try to get some Barbancourt Reserve Speciale, and join in. Maybe I'll tie this thread to a write up on my blog linking to the thread and to other great articles about Haiti and the need for our support.

Sounds like fun - I am will join in for sure...unless I am called to fly out to provide medical support on the ground there. Presently on a waiting list for flights...but this is good news I guess, providing me time to find a a bottle of 8yr if there is still one available.

RonJames,

I'm in on this noble gesture. I'll crack a bottle of 15 yr old with and post live. Like you I too have been busy with drumming up support for Haiti. My Radio stations did a massive coins for Haiti drive just yesterday with The Bank of Nova Scotia.

Gecko, as I was writing this I new atleast one cat would be down for this, and that was you my friend.

I'll be drinking the 5 star but if you have any barbancourt (or clairin, i wont tell) then it'll do. I've got to get my bottle of 5 star this weekend.

I put a little blurb on my blog about this event (http://therumhowlerblog.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/howling-highlight-have-a-drink-for-haiti/) and also an nice bit of work Rumdood (http://rumdood.com/2010/01/22/haitian-libations-raising-money-for-haiti/) is involved with. Hopefully I get a few more persons to click the link and join us.

My wife is searching for the Barbancourt as I type this so hopefully I will be ready.

The chatroom is a good idea. I think I will split my screen and keep an eye on the thread as well as I not sure if guests to the MOR site cannot enter the chatroom. Maybe we could post some of the chat comments to keep everyone involved.

ice added!!!
[thrall] 6:35 pm: May i ask where you are AW?
[Jason] 6:35 pm: I'm heading to Cuba in a week. Hopefully that'll be a good haul
[Arctic Wolf] 6:36 pm: Edmonton

[Arctic Wolf] 6:37 pm: I do okay though, i have over 70 bottles now
[RonJames] 6:37 pm: for that matter anybody else getting anise?
[young0076] 6:37 pm: I told you guys north of the boarder to ask your post office if it is legal to have
it sent to you there and I will do the same.......I have no problem boxing it up and sending it.
[young0076] 6:37 pm: as long as you pay LOL
[thrall] 6:38 pm: yep...im with you young...ill ship to anyone
[Arctic Wolf] 6:38 pm: That might be it, I'm trying to figure out the spice i get, but it is illusive
[Mistahunter] 6:38 pm: ron james...this was a great idea. we should organize something more often.
maybe feature the "rum of the month"
[Arctic Wolf] 6:38 pm: You know it might be anise and a touch of orange peel
[thrall] 6:38 pm: RJ and AW..your both doing the 8 yes?
[Arctic Wolf] 6:38 pm: does that make sense to anyone
[RonJames] 6:39 pm: 8 for me
[Arctic Wolf] 6:39 pm: yes
[RonJames] 6:39 pm: orange with anise thats it!
[thrall] 6:39 pm: ok...so i wont have the same flavor profile then
[Arctic Wolf] 6:39 pm: tell us anyway
[RonJames] 6:39 pm: no worries, thats what makes it fun thrall, lololol
[young0076] 6:39 pm: thrall where are you at ?
[thrall] 6:40 pm: im not getting anise....
[thrall] 6:40 pm: but do see the orange

[Arctic Wolf] 6:40 pm: corriander?
[thrall] 6:40 pm: and...lol...the way my arm smells after they do a blood draw....
[Arctic Wolf] 6:40 pm: The vanilla is there for sure
[RonJames] 6:41 pm: i had the vanilla as well
[thrall] 6:41 pm: cimmamon....
[Arctic Wolf] 6:41 pm: yeah there is a little medicinal
[RonJames] 6:41 pm: and i'd rather the arm then the dentist glove taste
[thrall] 6:41 pm: and mace
[Arctic Wolf] 6:41 pm: I thought just a hint of cinnamon
[Saxman] 6:41 pm: brb gents
[RonJames] 6:42 pm: mace, im not to familiar with, I haven't cooked with it......yet!
[Arctic Wolf] 6:42 pm: I'd rather the dental glove than the other glove
[RonJames] 6:42 pm: I 2nd that saxman
[itsme_timd] 6:42 pm: Oh boy, don't think I should have had this on an empty stomach. *********
[thrall] 6:42 pm: mace is the outer netting on nutmeg...milder then nutmeg
[RonJames] 6:42 pm: lololol, arctic i am rolling with that one, might have to tell that to the proctologist
[Arctic Wolf] 6:43 pm: yeah i think that was the hint of hazelnut I tasted
[Arctic Wolf] 6:43 pm: I wasn't sure anyone was old enough to get that
[thrall] 6:43 pm: to me its not haaelnut...its mace...
[The Foredeck]: young0076 has left at 6:43 pm
[RonJames] 6:43 pm: itsme timd, get some food in ya big guy, anything
[Jason] 6:43 pm: I got it... I just choose to chase it out of my brain quickly
[itsme_timd] 6:44 pm: Yeah, I'm going to so some dinner soon.
[itsme_timd] 6:44 pm: LOL
[thrall] 6:44 pm: what..you mean i had to have dinner first...lol
[Arctic Wolf] 6:44 pm: that could be i always change my mind several times before I do a review,
and at fifteen it could change quite a bit
[RonJames] 6:44 pm: i thought we were drinking dinner? like the mailman does
[thrall] 6:44 pm: heh
[thrall] 6:45 pm: butter...i taste butter
[RonJames] 6:45 pm: more money for haiti tonight boys, im pouring a 2nd glass
[Arctic Wolf] 6:45 pm: yeah i mentioned butter right away
[thrall] 6:45 pm: i came in a bit late..
[Arctic Wolf] 6:45 pm: 2nd I'm on my third
[thrall] 6:45 pm: so you taste that one too....
[Arctic Wolf] 6:46 pm: thats okay i was just confirming
[itsme_timd] 6:46 pm: I got the butter as well, Thrall.
[RonJames] 6:46 pm: i got butter as well
[Arctic Wolf] 6:46 pm: I think I get just a hint of the cinnomn behind the butter
[RonJames] 6:47 pm: if i had to say for me, butter, apple, spice (anise-orange) with an apple fade
[thrall] 6:47 pm: hhmm..apple....
[RonJames] 6:47 pm: could be cinamon butter, its definitely not straight
[RonJames] 6:47 pm: and cinamon would have the kick
[Arctic Wolf] 6:47 pm: no apple for me
[RonJames] 6:48 pm: but then so would nutmeg
[thrall] 6:48 pm: ya know.....its not so much apple for me as it is ...mango
[Mistahunter] 6:48 pm: anyone have a good comparison to this rum?
[Arctic Wolf] 6:48 pm: more citrus
[Mistahunter] 6:48 pm: it has a very different profile to what i usually drink...
[RonJames] 6:48 pm: i think the apple is what makes it whiskey ish for me
[thrall] 6:49 pm: what do you like mistahunter?
[Arctic Wolf] 6:49 pm: The Juan Santos five is what immediately came to my mind on first sip
[RonJames] 6:49 pm: but I am NOT a whiskey man
[Arctic Wolf] 6:49 pm: I agree with that whiskey ish ness
[RonJames] 6:49 pm: for comparisons I would put it in the same category as french/agricole
[Arctic Wolf] 6:50 pm: I think the oak used to age this was old oak with not much tannin left
[thrall] 6:50 pm: say.....did anyone see the questiosn i put in about the 15 bottles?
[itsme_timd] 6:50 pm: Have a great night everyone, I'm off to find some dinner. Thanks for organizing
this, Ron. Thoughts and prayers continue to be sent for Haiti.
[thrall] 6:50 pm: good seeing you it
[RonJames] 6:50 pm: thanks for joing itsme timd, enjoy the dinner!

Enjoyed the chat fellow rum lovers, might even be a good idea if we were to try to arrange a time once a week to meet up, or shall I say chat it up as we sit and discuss rums etc

I'd like to thank all those for turning out, we had 10 people at one time I think. It was good to continue support Haiti, and of course, it was a blast drinking rum with fellow rum lovers! What a pleasant surprise the barbancourt rums are. We should organize something, maybe once a month to start. The rum of the month doesn't sound like a bad idea to start, unless of course that rum of the month turns out to be that $4G pre castro rum on ebaylaughing.gif. The chat room worked awesome I must say.

I truly enjoyed the discussion (and the rum) last night. I think I raised about $50!!! gzzg

The Barbancourt 8yr is now on my preferred list of rums. It was very good with an ice cube.

I am definitely in on the monthly chat sessions.

Look forward to next time.

For me it was great to taste the rum with others sampling and mentioning the flavors they noticed, this helped me to look for those flavors as well. To me the butterscotch was very pronounced in the 8yo but something I hadn't recognized until it was mentioned.

Monthly rum tastings sound great to me!

I like the idea of a monthy chat. Ronjames could start a thread under Rum discussions called monthly chat and ask Ed to make it a sticky. Maybe take nominations for the rum we like and let Ronjames pick it based on the discussion. That way we could make sure it is a rum that is relatively available to everyone. If there is some kind of problem making it a sticky thread, I could make a sticky in the Connoisseurs Cabinet on my shelf there.

If I have access to the selected rum, count me in. Once a month would be perfect, once a week will deplete my collection !

The chat room worked awesome I must say.

Thanks for the feedback on the chat feature. I'm still trying to figure out how to have the number of people using the chat room in the header above, one more project.

Sorry I was occupied last night. Sometimes there's just too much to do and I wasn't near my computer. And thanks to Artic Wolf for copying the chat for the archives.

No worries about that Ed, the chat worked fine for us last night. Im kind of the opinion that its a party no matter who's in there:D I do owe you an apology as I just put out a thread to get a "rum of the month chat" going without your permission:oI hope its okay and that you'll be able to join us for further chats.
