O.K., Lets have a little fun.:D Let's say you know you are going away to a remote location for 6 months. You can only take 5 choices of rum with you. What 5 would you choose at this time?
( I guess we could call this your 5 favorite rum list at this time.......feel free to update your list at any time). Since I thought up this silly thread I will start::rolleyes:
Neisson Rhum Agricole XO
Man, this is harder than I thought...........
El Dorado 15
Appleton 21
De Paz Blue Cane Amber Rhum
Havana Club Barrelproof
I know what your thinking.......but no, I am only on my first pour of the evening!

This thread touches near the predicament in which I find myself. I'm on the road for another couple of months and could potentially have my office send a few of my favorites. But frustratingly I must work from memory instead of sitting and tasting them in order to make the selection
Goslings Family Reserve
St James Hors D' Age
El Dorado 15
Santa Teresa 1796
Temptryst Mesquite

Ron Zacapa XO
Ron Matusalem 15 year old (Cuban)
Ron Vigia Anejo Extra
Doorly's XO
Havana Club Barrel Proof
Tough to decide as so many good rums out there now:)

Well, this is more fun than I thought!! Many of the rums all of you have mentioned could make my list, easily. CA, tell me more about Ron Vigia.....
I am not familiar with this rum. I searched for the Cuban version of Ron Matusalem when I was in the Islands, but could not find it.
This is tough, isen't it!

The Cuban Ron Matusalem is quite hard to find and the bottles I have were bought a few years back in Havana but didn't see any this year:confused:
The Ron Vigia is a really good rum, well balanced and has that true Cuban flavour. Not seen it too often but managed to grab a couple of bottles from the Casa del Ron on 64th street in Varadero this year and half way through the first one:D Appears to be 15 year old from what I can garner from the label...my Spanish is real basic phrase book stuff sadly:(
Man, so many of these rums I still need to try!
Right now my list would probably be:
Appleton Estate 21
Ron Zacapa 23
Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva
Flor de Cana Centenario
Foursquare Spiced...so I have something I won't feel guilty about mixing with whatever fruit juices are available in this "remote location". :)

Pyrat XO

It's interesting to see everyone else's selections. Here are mine.
Santa Theresa 1796
Zaya
Flor de Cana 18
Cruzan Single Barrel (it would be my every day rum--nice enough on its own but makes the others taste that much better)
It's a hard call between Pampero, Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva, and Pyrat for the last bottle.

From a Venezuelan guy this would be the selection:
Pampero Aniversario
Cacique Antiguo
Santa Teresa 1796 Solera
Diplomatico Reserva Especial
Santa Teresa Bicentenario...the best in my list and sorry for you guys but this last one is not sold in the market.
Cheers,
Fabio.

Off-Topic:
Whoa...is that THE Wayne Curtis? I just finished your book and am a frequent reader of your blog. Big fan.
On-Topic:
I recently was lucky enough to get to sample some of the Temptryst Cherrywood rum. Put it on my list...it can replace the Foursquare and I'll just not mix anything. THAT is a fantastic rum. Great nose, rich, woody flavor with almost no burn, and really dry. Very mellow, terrific for sipping...I should really put together my notes on it somewhere.

If you mean by THE Wayne Curtis the Itidarod racer or the Canadian fishing writer or the British soccer star, I'm afraid I disappoint. I'm just the rum writer.
Where did you get the Temptryst -- is it in stores now, or do you have a special pipeline to Daniel?

And here we are thinking that you wrote about rum while fishing... during the off season from soccer and dog sledding.
Nice to see you on the forum here.

That's the one!

I wouldn't call it a "pipeline", but my sampling was at the grace of Daniel. ;)

Welcome wcurtis,
It will be great to have you as a part of this forum! Your book was a great read, fun and informative. I had a very hard time not including Niesson or La Favorite Blanc in my top 5.......the syrup and lime not withstanding. I am enjoying seeing everyones choices, and the difficulty in making them!!
This is a terrific thread, Hank. Of course to me, it simply highlights how many things are currently missing from my shelf.
Luckily, Hi Times is having a sale right now...looks like my brother and I will be heading that way this weekend.

Dood was kind enough to send me a bottle of rum that I had been looking for but was locally unatainable.
