I'm planning a number of Rum Seminars for bartenders and consumers around the US and a few other countries. As part of the planning process, where would you like to attend a seminar.
For the trade, this is shaping up to be a 3-4 hour seminar focusing on the different styles of rum and how fermentation, distillation and blending affects the final product with samples from various suppliers.
For consumers, a 2-3 hour seminar focused on the diversity of my favorite spirit, local variations and what to look for in the spirits you consume.
Of course, this is subject to change but your help would be appreciated to make this as good as it can be for you.

Ed, you know me, i would love to go to either-- to hear you speak is like the echo of my soul- with better information!. . .
And i meet both criteria . . .

Both sound good Ed. As for locations, I'd stick to the big cities. NYC or Boston around me. Maybe Vancouver and some other areas where we have a large concentration. I know I for one would love to see how some cocktails are made just to make sure I am making them right. For instance, I've never ordered a dark'n'stormy, daiquiri, ti' punch, and many others at a bar because they don't know how to make them. I think this would be a blast.

NYC, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles are on the short list but there are a number of other cities that I don't want to overlook like Portland, Seattle, Denver, Miami, Atlanta and of course there's Canada when the weather warms up.

Assuming that Madison WI is a little too small, I'll vote for Chicago. It bummed me out that I found this site last year just after a rum tasting in Chicago. Also I know where to score some Zaya from Guatemala down there...

I am planning an European trip but don't know if I'll make next summer, though I hope to.
As for Madison, that isn't too far from Chicago and if there is enough interest I would be pleased to make the trip and do a rum seminar / dinner at an appropriate venue.
Don't assume that a city is too small. It is amazing where the interest in rum can be found.

I've added some links to the seminar page (http://www.ministryofrum.com/seminars2010.php) and am getting a good response from suppliers.
I'm also looking into an Australian tour.

My focus is all sugar cane spirits and what makes them unique. Certainly CachaŠ·a and aguardiente are included in most of the seminars that I do.

Florida is on every rum supplier's list but I'm not sure where they want to do a seminar. The Tampa Bay area is popular and although there are a lot of residents in the Orlando area all too many people think of that as a resort / transient population not worthy of education.
The Miami area is certainly rum-centric but most suppliers tell me that it is dominated by a couple of big brands. But Florida is definitely on the short list.

Yes, in Orlando the "Rum Fest" is Captain and Coke and a lot of quickly made "rum drinks" at a few booths. Educating the masses is an uphill battle, but there are more rum lovers here than it seems. The selection of rums here is good though, considering. The only real rum oriented bars are located on I Drive and cater to the tourist population. Tampa is a good place, as is Miami.

I was giving this some thought this weekend and I think it'd be easier for some if this was a one day event. Example, I take my wife to NYC for the rum event (she might go shopping) then we stay at hotel over night, next day I get dragged to the sites and stay married. Might get a better turnout this way.

Marty, I will be back in Boston in February, I hope. Or shortly thereafter. I met an amazing number of people in Boston and really enjoyed the few days I was there. I can't wait to get back, I just wish it was warmer in Boston in February, but I know where to get a good drink, or two.

To do anything around a spring break crowd would be silly.

I never expected to find David Allan Coe here. I thought he was more of a Jack Daniels-man... :D
