Hmm there definitively something wrong with this trhead.. I can't edit it after posting it 30 seconds after.. I mean 1.5oz of Cold water and the Rum was chilled in the fridge for quite a while. But enjoying it now.

Yes.. i am quite fond of classical cocktail construction and of course utilizing Rum as a base is the true foundation of all cocktails.
Wines in their various forms are an exceptional modifier (or secondary flavor) in cocktails.
Some of the more famous 'classic' (Pre-prohibition) Rum cocktails utilize wine (or aromatized/fortified wine. For Example: El Presedente, Blue Boy, Archbishop, Rum Royale, Air Mail, Barracuda, Sevilla, etc.

Well, just so it doesn't go to waste, I've been drinking 1.oz of Cruzan 9 with 1.oz of 7up (well the generic equivalent) and 1oz of Water and it tastes like Chocolate or a hot fudge.. very good.
Now I'm on the same mix but with Sailor Jerry Navy Spiced, not as good.. With the rest of Sailor Jerry.. it'll be in competition with Cruzan 9 for the Rum and Coke contest for me.. Maybe it'll be time for me to say goodbye to the Hullagirls... but that's going to be for another night as I've got a good buzz going now. :)

Taking a break tonight from my recent addiction to Rhum Agricole and T Punches. Sipping El Dorado 12 over an ice cube. I can't describe the flavors as others here have so eloquently stated, so I'll just say its luscious.

Cabinet was bare except for some 'close-out' rum that i bought a few years ago. A friend came by and i whipped up some drinks.
Rum & Soda water was my favorite last night,
but the no-name tropical drinks were blowing people away.
3 Oz Rum
3 Oz Orange Mango Juice (Simply Brand)
2 Oz Cava
4 Dashes Cocktail Kingdom Falernum Bitters
Build in a collins, with cracked ice and swizzle till frosty.

Cabinet still bare i'll call this drink the cleaning house:
3 Oz Marti Coconut
2 Oz Coruba Mango
4 Oz Iced Tea
Tolerable with spicy crackers... but not recommended.

The better of my close out booze is:
The Crappy Old Fashioned..
3 Oz Marti Coconut
8 or 9 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
Ice and Stir...
i had 3 this morning...
Decent, but i can't wait for this to be gone!

After a loooooong day of chores,....I decided to try your version of Hot Buttered Rum. Ground up the spices fresh and added them to the batter before taking my dog out on her nightly walk. The frost was on the Pumpkin tonight, so it only heightened my anticipation of a piping-hot Rum nightcap. But I took the liberty of upping the Rum ratio a tad.....well OK, a bunch. It was magnificent!

Valid point.
It was a gift and i have a policy.... Once the bottle is 'half-way' it is fair game.
In other words, when it is less than half full any reason to sip is a legitimate reason--no matter how spendy the bottle is..

It's on special with 3$ off right now and considering buying another bottle only for it's great taste as RUM and Coke mix but as a $26.85 mixer.. I don't know.. we'll see.. as I also like the Rye and Coke :)

Try the Appleton Vx in this modified version of the Cosmopolitan:
The Traveller (http://therumhowlerblog.wordpress.com/cocktails/rum-cocktail-the-traveller/)
(You can use red Cranberry juice instead of white).
The cocktail is awesome and you will find yet another great way to drink Appleton VX.

Well I've never had a Cosmopolitain, the only fancy cocktails I had were a Margarita, Martini (Gin) and a Black Russian.
I never heard of Cointreau, but then that's not surprising with my "very vast cocktail" experiences but I'll keep that Traveller's recipie in mind if I ever happen to buy white Cranberrie juice lol thanks Arctic.
I went to the LCBO (Ontario's liquor store) today and picked up Vodka a la Bruce Willis "Sobieski" and will compare with my Russian Stantard sometime.
Also saw the Flor de Cana 5 which I haven't found much reviews on but I'm going to wait till I go to the province of Quebec and pick up the 7years and or maybe just the 12yrs.

The Russian Standard is an exceptionally smooth and clean Vodka. I just wish it had a little flavour to tease my palate and to give it some character.
Tonight I'll be trying the Regalia Vodka at a friend's house,as we celebrate his birthday. I plan to bring a bottle of Pusser's Blue Label Rum as well as we will probably be toasting the holidays as well.
We will be making Cosmos, so mabe I will try my Traveller recipe with Pusser's tonight!

Sobieski vodka is excellent, as vodka goes. By which I mean, it tastes as good as any decent vodka and doesn't cost a fortune.

I concur djmont. I don't use Vodka all that much, but the Sobieski holds it's own against a bunch of costlier alternatives I compared it to. It's a great value and has excellent flavor IMHO.

1.5z. Malibu Coconut Original
The bourbon is just too strong and doesn't taste good to me so I added
0.5oz. Gekkeinkan Sake
1oz. Cold North Bay Water
1oz. Cheap Cola
And let me tell ya.. it's awfull!

When i am looking for an inexpensive, 'neutral-flavored' mixer i don't look at Sobieski (which is actually quite decent for Vodka-@ $17 a 1.75) i look at Don Q or Bacardi both usually floating around a dollar less. THough to be honest i am not usully looking for a 'neutral-flavored' mixer.

It is intriguing indeed--and yummy!
The sweetness i less than straight honey -about 33% of the sweetness of honey (a guess) and the flavor is impeccable honey with a delicat back note of delectable rum. This could easily be used as a modifier (it is 20% ABV) but it is lovely just to sip on it.

Finished a Century 15/25 ... a Rye Wshisky a few days ago, I think I'll go back to the Hiram Walker's Special Old whisky.. the next time I pick some up.

It's $34.80 here at our Liquor stores in Ontario.
Wow 50.0% Alcohol/Vol. now that's quite a bit. Maker's Mark is at 45% and started having a buzz after indulging 2 ounces of it in an hour... well a little more since I added some Malibu's Rum at 20 something % but was surprised. I'll have to look up some review of the Rittenhouse's whisky later on.

When you can swing it, add Brinley's Gold Coconut Rum to your comparison tasting. IMHO it blows the other 2 out of the water for authentic coconut flavor and the quality of the Rum base carrying it. cheers.gif

Someone else also mentionned The Brinley line to me before and it does seems awesome, especially if you say they'll knock the other two's socks off and still at 15% more abv!
Unfortunately our provincial stores here and in Quebec doesn't carry that line.
I use the Malibu coconut as modifiers and find that it works great. But if I had a Brinley Gold Coconut at %36, I might just sip that alone.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Oh my!
I picked up a bottle of "Ron Diaz Gran Reserva" at my (well trained) liquor store. It is probably the lowest priced rum I have bought in years and was only purchased on the high recommendation of the manager. It is wonderful. I had thought it could be used for cocktails, but it has proved worthy of sipping.
It is proving to be a real treat to have the manager of my local store on the same page as me in terms of Rum, (and also wines).
