View Full Version : How Regularly Do You Drink Rum?
I like to drink every day. During the week this is a couple of glasses after work and at the weekends whenever the mood takes me.
Some people have suggested that this is too regularly, but as I have no compulsion to drink at times other than when I am relaxing or enjoying myself I don't have problem with it!
I also think that it is better to drink like that than these binge-drinkers who drink themselves into a stupor every Friday and Saturday night!
So, how regularly do you like to drink rum?
I suppose the next question should be "and how much?!" :)

There are other spirits that I enjoy beyond rum.
Depending on the mood, I may be having a scotch, tequila, port, or rum.
I would say at least once a week, sometimes more ;)

I drink rum about 3-5 times a week but I usually only have one drink each of those times. I also agree that given equal amounts of alcohol it is healthier to spread it out than to binge.
It depends for me.
Lately I've had a few fingers roughly every other night.
Sometimes I'll go weeks without any drinks at all, other times I'll enjoy a nice port or even a beer instead of rum.

I enjoy a measure of rum every night. Sometimes a rum and ginger or rum and tonic, or neat or over ice, with a good cigar when I have an hour. Just one drink though, but on the weekends I may have a Ti Punch in the afternoon, and a drink or 2 in the evening. I always practice moderation. With a cigar though, sometimes I will switch to port, cognac or a single malt.:p

I usually have a drink about every other night...it is a nice way to unwind after a difficult day of work. I make sure I keep it in moderation.

I usually have one or two drinks most evenings after work and perhaps more on my days off. Rum neat or with tonic is my first choice, but I also enjoy beer, wine, and other spirits. I work in liquor retail and try to research as widely as possible so that I can speak from experience with customers.

I usually drink rum/whiskey whenever I feel like it. Be it on the weekday or weekend. No matter what the time is.
Some people have suggested that this is too regularly, but as I have no compulsion to drink at times other than when I am relaxing or enjoying myself I don't have problem with it! Some people think it is some kind of a taboo to drink on a week night after work. The same people have suggested that I have a problem if I drink on the week but if I drink on the weekend they don't see it as a problem. I always tell them that it is they who have the problem and not me since I do not feel compelled to drink and I do not get intoxicated on the week. It is the same people who say its too early to be drinking beer if they catch you doing it at a time they don't approve. Hell, the captain offered me ouzo at 10 in the morning in Greece when I was on a boat trip! I didn't find it disturbing at all, quite the contrary .

I drink rum about every other day, about 2 shots each. I don't binge on it by any means. Who says you can't have rum at 10 in the morning?

I have three to five shots of either Mount Gay Sugar Cane, Wray Overproof or 10 Cane chased with Coke (no Pepsi, Coke!) every night. I sleep like a baby and wake right up with the alarm at 7:01 (I give myself an extra minute).

I generally drink about 2 ounces of rum every night, but not religiously. There are severally nights that I don't drink at all, and some nights where I make a sizable dent in one of my bottles.
That being said.. I almost wanted to put fortnight, simply because it is such a rare term.
Fortnight!

During the week, I will either have a rum punch followed by rum served neat or two glasses of rum by itself. Weekends provide the arena and potential for drinking more rum, but I usually drink more rum by itself than mixed.

During the summer, its hard to sip on a rum, so lots of beer goes down my guzzle. Now its winter time, I'm stocking up on all my rums. Although I must say, I have a few rum and cokes every other night, with the other nights left for a good sipper.

A glass in the evening after work and then whenever i feel like it in the weekend. I never drink too much..or at least not during the weeks. Don`t like to get drunk, just relaxed. To me rum is supposed to be enjoyed slowly for a longer time not just get drunk quick..its the taste that matters.I like both sipping rums and blending rums.

Usually a rum and something before dinner or a glass of wine with dinner, and then a rum neat around 9:00 PM.

Being a shift worker I have an odd schedule. 776 if you know what I mean. Dow Chemical has anounced a .02 alcohol level limit or a pink slip. So I indulge on my days off only. Generally 2 to 3 shots in the early a.m. That is my favorite time. Then 2 to 3 shots in the evening. If you have never awoke early on a cold morning, lit your coleman lantern, put some good bacon on to fry with some biscuits and homemade dewberry jam while sipping some good rum, you are missing out.

If I don't have a La favorite Ti punch every week I go kinda crazy....Life's too short !!!!

daily and repeated each fortnight.
until about three weeks ago, it used to be weekly and only in the summer after racing. the daily at that point was bourbon. but for the last three weeks i've been trying two or four different rums a night.

I used to be a weekend drinker. Then, I would hit it pretty hard with a wide variety of mixed drinks and cocktails of my own mixological renderings. I have amassed a wide collection of spirits and liqueurs, making drinks recommended in several old recipe guides. Now, I tend have a little somethin' evey night. And, I sip more than I "indulge". Recently, in addition to rum , I have been sipping some cognac. So much to learn, so little time! glass.gif
I think a better question would be "Are you drinking more often than you used to?".
Knowing how much and how often others are drinking instanter is fairly irrelevent to one's own experience. Its too easy to use other experiences as cover for our own. But I would hazard a guess that those of us who frequent websites promoting alcoholic beverages are perhaps more likely to face the risk of a growing habit.
But we'll never find that out in this thread.

I'm not sure I agree with you on that one. Personally, since I have taken an interest in the finer spirits I find myself savoring them rather than just drinking them down. Also, I am no longer drinking a whole can of coke or ginger ale with every drink I have. Instead I am pouring myself an ounce or two of rum and sipping it slowly. That's gotta be healthier than tossing back a few beers or mixed drinks.
Of course there is also the occasional event where I consume far more than I should, but I consider those to be temporary relapses from my younger days, not a growing trend!

I think Joe Walsh said: The smoker you drink, the player you get.
I can rarely keep up with the big kids when we go out drinking. Especially not the likes of Paul McFadyen at IP Bartenders or Jake Burger at Portobello Star or Ricki Brodrick at Trailer Happiness with their years of professional training.
Sampling small amounts of many fine spirits neat leaves me mindful of the power of the spirit, but tossing back a few well mixed zombies or killer punches can put me over the line with ease.

I'm with Shock Therapy on this one. Now, that I've discovered the art of savoring fine spirits, my liver has been on light(er) duty. As to "Knowing how much and how often others are drinking instanter is fairly irrelevent to one's own experience. Its too easy to use other experiences as cover for our own...", I have no idea what you are talking about. Judging by the preceding posts, I would say that most of us are marching to our own drummer and taking ownership of our own parades!

I too, now that I have an appreciation for finer spirits, drink far less than I used to. Gone are the days of the $14, 1.75 liter plastic bottles of vodka. It's quality over quantity at this point. I'm also running a rum deficit: I import more rum into my home than empty bottles I export to the recycling bins.
Now that eggnog is no longer available, my rum drinking is one or two in the evening from my sipping stock. Haven't mixed since the holidays.
I used to drink quite rarely for no other reason than because I just didn't really feel a need or desire to drink, but in the past few weeks, I've found that a drink in the evening is quite relaxing and enjoyable and puts me into a happy mood. Therefore, I had to select "daily" in the poll.
Sipping rum is a pass-time I treasure.

An evening cocktail has been a cherished tradition for me handed down from my father. I have learned that enjoying a fine rum in a nice crystal glass is a wonderful, old fashion way to wind down afer a long day. While I realize those concerned about being politically correct will shudder at the above, when you apply maturity and standards of quality you will find great pride in the tradition. Nothing beats a Single Barrel Cruzan Rum over ice in a crystal glass. Take pride in the evening tradition.

Id only be a weekend drinker!! Saturday night, After a long weeks work, to the pub with a few friends!..Maybe the occasional Rum on a weekday...very occasional lol
I enjoy 3-5 a week in smallish doses. Most of the rums I really enjoy are not sold for export, so they are hard to get, thus requiring me to consume in moderation. Even if I could get my hands on more, it would just not make sense to drink too much. Taking your time to sip and relish a fine rum is far better.

Maybe once or twice a week, however, there may be times when I won't drink for weeks at a time. It is just very relaxing. Gone are the days of drinking for the sole purpose of getting drunk. I don't miss those times...especially the next morning.
Besides, if you have a bottle you paid possibly hundreds of $$$'s for, I would hope you are cherishing it and not slamming it like a soda.
Lately, every day. Usually after work, though I do have two bottles at my desk in the office. Sometimes I'll go for a long stretch (months) without a taste of rum, but then I'm having an occasional beer or perhaps a scotch. And it doesn't normally happen, but there are definitely rum parties that see my intake for two weeks or more being consumed in a night!

It depends a lot on what I have for dinner. If the meal screams out for a good wine, that's what I'll have. Generally, I used to have a beer or two with dinner on other days, but Rum has changed that habit a bit. Now, I tend
to wait until days end when all the chores have been completed to savor a good Rum sipper chased by a good beer (usually a brown ale, porter,
stout, or Belgian ale) to wind things down before hitting the sack. It's a real satisfying way to end the day.

to start with a quote from Tom Waits:
'I don't have a drinking problem, except when I can't find a drink.'
I usually get myself 2-3 bottles every other day and take 2cl of each in a nosing glass to compare them and relax. Listening to some Lounge or easy listening Jazz, Blues or just Chilling music. Sometimes a thin piece of dark chocolate comes with that.
Once tried a Santa Damiana Maduro Robusto and sipped a Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Really good but it has been my first cigar as well as crosstasting ever.
And unfortunately i had to open my windows for like 2 days to make the smell disappear.

I generally have one drink about 5 days a week. Generally split between bourbon and rum. That amount can actually be benefical to high blood pressure. Higher intake increases blood pressure according to several studies. As a retired pharmacist I find it is a great deal better than adding another pill. The whole process can be very relaxing as well. I look at the drink as a positive lifestyle change.

It depends of what is in the shelf... If there's Gosling, so it could be every night twice... If it's a 7 or 12 years old, I keep it for important days. (my anniversary, the cat's anniversary, the anniversary of my first lost tooth, etc.); More is dangerous - for my health and/or for my purse's health.
But I don't drink in daytime, or if I drank some (wine, beer, or whisky) then I don't and wait for the next day.
Well, that' what usually happens...

I find myself typically having 1 or 2 cocktails every other day or so. Sometimes 3 or 4 nights in a row. Alot depends on if I have any new rums to the collection to try or not. I always try any new rums straight first. Never tasted one I can honestly say I would sit around and sip straight. I always mix my rums with a Pepsi. Prolly a shot and half to two shots per 12oz can with ice. cheers.gif

For the past year it was on most Saturdays or Sundays (Sailor Jerry and Coca Cola) but wanted to cut on the sugar intake then switched to (Rye and Ginger Ale), that's still too much so went with (Vodka and Garden Cocktail) but then weren't drinking the bottle of Garden Cocktail fast enough and it would spoil.
All of this for the Buzz I love getting and how well you fall asleep when you hit that pillow.
Now that I've "matured" I'm looking into sipping something good (like old J.R. in Dallas) and not necessarily looking for the buzz. However I'm afraid my buzz days won't be over for quite a bit :)

Lately it's been every day. but then I tend to drink a Riedel Whisky glass about 1/2 full in the "bowl". Not a lot.
