Ever since the venerable Robert Burr turned me on to Crown Wine and Spirits (via UPS from FL) for Ron Atlantico, I have found other "East Coast rums" on their website. Now, a couple bottles of Don Q Grand Anejo (commemorative packaging) has come to my door. What a spicy treat! A full burn on the initial sip tells you this is a real rum-lover sipper. Wood, pepper, and nuts hit you afterward. The finish is mildly (good) bitter with a light burn. yay.gif I can see why the people on Puerto Rico have embraced Don Q as their favorite son. Nothing in the Bacardi line reaches out and womps you like this one. That's coming from a guy which loves the gentle (by comparison) 8 Anos or Reserva Limitada. :D

When I first tried Don Q Gran Anejo 16 years ago I didn't know that it was originally bottled to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus coming to the Caribbean, an event that was celebrated with mixed enthusiasm in the islands.

Then Don Q Gran Anejo was much lighter, today it is a blend of heavy and light rums which are aged and then blended to be a very nice sipping rum. Add a little bit of fresh coconut water and ice and you're as close to paradise as you'll come in this lifetime. I'll be adding more to the description on this site as soon as I have more than a minute to do so.

It is always a highlight of any trip to Puerto Rico for me. Needless to say much was consumed last week in Old San Juan and another bottle made it back to the TCI from the dutyfree store. So glad they had it in the VIP tent and great to meet the lady who producers it, Sylvia.

Its the one that turned me on to sipping rums. I always find a taste of toffee in it that makes me smile.

I had been looking for this rum for awhile, and in a little liqour store across from the Delano, low and behold, there was a bottle. It now sits on my shelf awating to be opened. A little coconut water? Well, twist my arm.....
everyone knows I hate coconut water;);)............

The Don Q Gran Anejo has been a bit of a sleeper here. It does show a wonderfully aged dry style and a nice bit of rancio flavor in the finish. As the Rumelier said...A good bit of it passed through the lips in San Juan at the Festival event.

Ed is right on in regards how this rum has evolved. I remember tasting it many years ago and finding it just too light. It's always a good reminder to come back once in a while and check the progress....Blends do change!

Sylvia Santiago, the now VP of Manufacturing was a joy to meet and is one of only a few women who have attained such a status in the male dominated world of rum.
