Here are a few places I try not to miss while I'm in the Big Apple, not in any particular order.

Brandy Library
Flatiron Lounge
Milk & Honey
Passerby
202
Gramercy Tavern
Pegu Club
Death & Co, if they are open

Thanks for all the tips. I will be in New York for the first time this summer. Can't afford to drink at all the ritzy establishments, but I will definitely be checking out the Pegu Club because of its reputation on egullet.

Do you know of any good places in Toronto, Canada?

I haven't had the opportunity to go to many bars in Toronto but I know some people from Toronto will be finding this forum soon. The LCBO stores, the largest of which is downtown, are worth seeing as they sometimes have some interesting things in all departments of the store. The last time I flew to Toronto, I was allowed only one liter of spirit entering Canada.

I am currently in Toronto and have been quite underwhelmed with the bars here, rum or otherwise... the whole LCBO thing is a drag.

Any suggestions gratefully received...

Really? I've browsed around the LCBO site before, and found their selection quite good compared to the BC Liquor Stores.

Add Yerba Buena to the list of NYC bars & restaurants for rum & cocktail lovers. Avenue A between 1st & 2nd.

Latin American/Cuban food - very good and good size portions
Original and classic cocktails - the head bartender worked at PDT and Pegu Club before taking over here.

Last time I was there I discussed rum and rum cocktails with Giovanny, the host, who ended up pouring complimentary sips of Zacapa 23. Very good time.

It looks like you had my seat at the far right side of the bar and some of my favorites as well. I'm in NY tonight and might make it there.
