A mate of mine is a recent convert to premium rum and particularly likes Pyrat XO. He has tried a few others that I'd thought he would enjoy, like Zacapa XO and Mount gay Extra Old but he prefers the sweetness of the Pyrat. He did say he liked the caramel and butterscotch of the Zacapa but wanted the sweetness.
Any recommendations?

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva (http://www.refinedvices.com/Diplomatico-Reserva-Exclusiva-Ron-Antiguo) is pretty sweet but not as sweet as Zacapa. I think Zacapa is probably the sweetest rum I've got at the moment.

Have him try Vizcaya VXOP and Captain Morgan Private Stock - they are pretty sweet and great for new rum drinkers - and will put him on the path to the wide world of drier and more complex rums.
Your friend is off to a pretty good start if he likes the Pyrat - that was too much for me when I first started this journey!

El Dorado 12 year old for sweetness.
One Barrel (from Belize) for its butterscotch taste.

Give Zaya a try. Most of my friends that have not yet fully discovered rum really enjoy it.

I just want to second the Diplomatico rec, and also suggest Zaya.
I'm still learning to drink straight rum, and my preferences for everything definitely run towards the sweet.

I do agree on the sweet rums. Most on here have answered the same questions for me as well. I will second the Captain Morgan Private Stock, very sweet and smooth. Sailor Jerry is a nice rum as well. A bit stronger, but a really good flavored rum, and a dynamite mixer. Some good flavored, sweet rums I have also found are the Cruzan Raspberry, Black Cherry and Orange. More for mixers, but they do taste good on the rocks when you are just looking for some sweets with a little kick, not to strong at all..
Enjoy

Here would be a relative sweetness hierarchy of rums I have recently tried.
The sweetest ..............El Dorado 12yr
followed closely by ........ Diplomatico Reserva
Then .........Cruzan Estate Single Barrel and Zacapa 23
and then .......... Flor de Cana 7yr and Ron Matusalem Grnade Reseve
More bitter rums are .........Appleton Estate 12yr
and then ...... Mt Gay Extra Old
Finally at bottom of the sweetnes meter is Bicardi
I've left lots out but that should help a little. In general terms I find the Carribean Rums the most bitter especially the popular American brands, the Cental American brands seem to walk the line between bitter and sweet and finally the South American brands are the sweetest. (Just in general)
Based on your friends indication I would go with El Dorado 12.

Thanks four your advice guys. Greatly appreciated. Now all we need is somewhere to buy them. The quest of finding a store that will ship to Australia is proving difficult. If anyone happens to be in Hi Time Wine some time soon, can they ask the shippers if they will send me rum please? No answer to email and I keep missing the people in the know when I call.

I suppose perceptions vary, but I wouldn't put Cruzan Single Barrel in a "sweet" list. To me, it has a lot of wood and a certain drier (dry being relative with rum) quality.
