So I was buying a bottle of Mount Gay XO for a friend of mine when I found a bottle of Matusalem Gran Reserva on sale for $18.99. I don't know what it normally goes for, but that seemed like a pretty good price, so I grabbed it. I got up to the counter and the guy at the register sees that it doesn't have a price sticker on it, so rather than check, or even ask me, he just rang it up for $9.99. That really made my day. I'll be trying it tonight, I'll let you know what I think.

Tried it last night. I found it to be very enjoyable. I'd like to try it side by side by side with the Mount Gay XO and Santa Teresa 1796, to really hammer out which of those three is my favorite. I will say this though, the Matusalem seemed pretty spicy (in a good way) at first but seemed to get smoother as it went (I only had one last night, so inebriation was not the cause). I certainly enjoyed it and heartily recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

I haven't had the Gran Riserva yet (because we don't get sales like that here in the national champion of the liquor tax, Seattle - congrats!) but I bought the Matusalem Clasico last weekend and I agree about the spice. I don't think I've tasted a *hotter* rum, which is fantastic neat but abysmal in a Cuba Libre.
