My brother-in-law is vacationing in the Dominican Republic. I am wondering if any have an idea of the rums available on the island. Are they mostly Dominican, or do they also import from neighboring islands. Not sure what I am looking for, just some good rums. He is willing to bring back some for me, and I would like to send a shopping list. ;) It would be great if they imported Sangster's Rum Cream, the wife's favorite. I am more of a golden rum fan.
Also, does anyone have an idea of the cheaper places to purchase. i.e. In Jamaica, we found the cheapest was at the airport as we were leaving. Thanks for the help. Jim

I think there was a thread on this a few months ago.
Briefly though, almost all the rum sold is from the Dominican Republic. Bacardi would probably be the most popular foreign rum, perhaps followed by Barbancourt (from neighboring Haiti). Others I remember seeing are Zacapa, Havana Club and Flor de Cana.
The large supermarkets in Santo Domingo would be the easiest places to go to find a selection of imported rums, and occasionally you find specialist liquor shops that carry a few. You aren't going to find a huge selection of imported rum anywhere, but by browsing around you might track down something you can't buy at home.
Personally, unless you dislike Dominican Rum, I'd just suggest you have your brother-in-law pick up some Brugal Siglo d'Oro (not always easy to find outside the overpriced tourist shops), Brugal Extra Viejo, Barcelo Imperial, or maybe take a chance on one of the local rum creams?
Tracking down anything else could be a major mission with uncertain chances of success. Though of course if he enjoys hacking through urban jungles in search of rare rums. . .

Thanks all, I did ask him to bring some Siglo d'oro if he finds any. Also, Zacapa 23, Oronoco and a couple others. We will have to see what he finds. I just hope he dosn't bring back anything I can easily find here. ;)

Barcelo Imperial, Gran Anejo, Anejo, Brugal Siglo de Oro, Macorix Viejo Reserva, Barbacourt 15, 8 or 4 year olds. Sibonney Dorado Superior, Bermudez Annivesario. Anyone of the above are good additions and good examples from Hispaniola. And if he's flying thru Miami pick up a bottle of Atlantico.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the Bermudez Aniversario. Another very nice one. Easy to find too.

Indeed he should! A delicious addition to the ranks of really great rums.
I recommend having them read Seamus' blog for a great write-up of DR and its rums.

And I thought my brother-in-law liked me! He has returned from his trip. I was anxiously awaiting his call to tell me what he was able to pick up for me. I was disappointed. He sadly told me he didn't bring back anything! eek.gif Used some excuse like... I didn't have room in my suitcase. I then found out he went with 8 other couples, only one of them brought back one bottle. HMMR I can't believe it! What is this world coming too? Thanks for the help. Jim

priorities!!??!!
I'd leave my clothes behind if it meant getting good rum in my suitcase. As a matter of fact, on our recent trip to Venezuela, my luggage was so full of rum, I stuffed all my clothes in a carry-on bag.

Well, I know of one brother-in-law that is going to have a hard time when he needs help moving, borrowing money, kidney donation, and a reserved spot in your bomb shelter. :(

There is a place in hell for people like that, lol!
Don't feel bad my so called real good friend that went to the Dominican Republic during the summer came back totally empty handed also. I was in shock on it. But hey you know the ole' saying. If you want something done right you gotta do it yourself most of the time.
So little time so much rum.

Not to rub it in but my future mother-in-law packed my sweetheart with rum for me when she returned from her native PR. Time to have a talk with the brother in-law...
