View Full Version : The many flavors of rum.

I realize that each brand of rum has a unique flavor. I find great enjoyment in finding rum that is very unique. Not just good or bad, but a rum that if put in front of you while blindfolded you could honestly say "wow, that is something different". To that end, I was wondering what would be your top 5 or 6 picks of something completely different? No flavored rums please (too easy).
Perhaps someone new to rum could use this as a guide to try the wide range of flavors.
My picks would be (for flavor difference, not best rums overall):
Gosling Black Seal
Captain Morgan Private Reserve
Mount Gay Extra Old
Zaya 12 yr. - Guatemala

Gosling's Black Seal, a toned down blackstrap, certainly unique.
Havana Club Blanco Anejo, fruity, full bodied for a silver, and sips quite well.
Angostura 1919. welcome to the world of vanilla nuances.
Zacapa 15 for a Central American sweet rum.
Plantaion Guyana, the tobacco, earthy delight.

El Dorado Special Reserve - tobacco and smoky oak.
Neisson Reserve - Almond, oak and sugar cane finish.
I would recognize Pyrat even after a few bottles! The 1919 as well.

I would second the Pyrat XO
and maybe even throw in the Cruzan Single Barrel.
Also, 10 Cane.

For a Butterscotch Rum:
Traveler's One Barrel
For an Orange Rum:
For an Oaky Rum:
For a Chocolatey Rum:
Gosling's Black Seal
For a Vanilla Rum:
Zaya or Oronoco

Some of the aforementioned rums are great... while I think others just grate.
First I would have to consider what might represent the major categories of fine rum.
In the agricole category, Neisson Reserve or St. James Extra Old
In the gentle category, Gosling's Old Family Reserve or Appleton 21
In the herbacious category, Plantation Jamaica 1998 or El Dorado 15.
In the cachaca category, Mae de Ouro or Oronoco.
In the classic category, Flor de Cana 18 or Santa Teresa 1796.
