Anyone tried this Cachaca? If so, how does it rate against Leblon, Sagatiba, Cucafresca etc ?

I haven't had the opportunity to try Cabana yet but it is entered in the Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition (http://ministryofrum.com/2007.php) which will be held next month so I expect to have some good notes on it then.
Did they actually enter anything? I know this is an old thread, but I came home tonight to find a box containing a bottle of Cabana Cachaca and a note from their marketing people.
Haven't cracked it open yet...have to finish packing and then get to bed before I fly to Reno tomorrow.

Most of us that were at last year's Tales of the Cocktail got to taste it. Not very high on my cachaca list, but I haven't tasted it in a while. ***5 minutes*** Okay just tasted. Still not favourably impressed. I look forward to hearing your impressions. What other cachacas do you have on hand for comparison?

i tried cabana during the ip tasting the other day and if i had to rate it against leblon and sagatiba it will come first
but it s my own taste because i really don t like sagatiba pura and leblon is quiet average.
the smell is really fruity almost like an unaged agricole but the taste is quiet the same as leblon

I have a bottle of Leblon as my only other representative of the spirit. I'm planning a trip to Hi Times this weekend, so I might pick up another one or two.

Even if you just pick a few of the lower dollar bottles and one GOOD one, they should give a decent overview of the category.
Recommended low $:
Boca Loca
Mae de Ouro
Pitu
Ypioca
Recommended high $$:
Armazem 16 yr
GRM

Interesting. My bottle of Cabana (personally signed by the master blender)has virtually no aroma except for alcohol and only mineral notes for flavor... like a poor vodka. I tasted it last night against 13 other cachacas. It came out on the very bottom! If your bottle has something going for it (because mine does not), then the company could have consistancy of quality issues.

GRM, got to taste this at Ybor City, what a wonderful flavor, little notes of cinammon was very unique!
Still haven't opened the bottle. Been too busy getting moved and settled to do any serious tasting.
Finally cracked open the bottle for a review last night. It wasn't bad at all. Fruity but not too sweet...not as grassy as a lot of other cachaca's I've had, and less industrial tasting than the low-end cachacas.
I wouldn't sit around sipping it neat, but I imagine it would make a smoking good caipirinha.

The one time I got to try Cabana, I thought the same as you in the fact that it was more industrial tasting, less of the heat from a traditional cachaca.
This, though, makes me think opposite from your viewpoint. I would view this more as a sipping cachaca (not that I sip cachacas, but if I did, this would lead the pack)) and less as a caipirinha mixer as it doesnt have the brunt you get from other cachacas.
Take what I say with a grain of salt, though. I only got to try it once straight and never got to try it in a caipirinha.

Nice review. What did you end up tasting for comparison cachacas?

I hadn't been able to make it to Hi Times, so all I had with me was my bottle of Leblon that I - quite frankly - keep hoping will just take a walk off of my shelf.
I still remember the Ypioca that you have though...maple syrup, no burn...sooooo good. THAT, to me, is for sipping.
I think the Cabana could be sipped. As far as cachacas go, it's a sipper...but since I have things like Appleton 21, Zacapa 23, etc. sitting on my shelf, I just can't see Cabana forcing its way into my glass alone.

I'll put in my tenth of a cent here.
I too was a recipient of the Cabana Cachaca, and I have to say that it impressed me a bit. My thoughts may be skewed, as I had just tried the Tommy Bahama White Sands and Prichard's Crystal, but I appreciated that while it was a heavily filtered spirit, it still kept the distinct notes that make it Cachaca.
I mention the other two, as they did not impress me as white rums, but rather as stripped down to practically neutral spirits, leaving only the faintest ghost of what the spirit is. For my palate, anyway.
I'll have to double-check the Cabana against the other two in my cabinet, Leblon (don't recall liking) and Ron Toucan, which is a nice and dirty one.
I think the Cabana could make one crisp as hell Caipirinha done right. As soon as the sun starts coming out, I'll have to put that to the test.
