Eric Felten wrote a nice article on my favorite spirit in his space called How's Your Drink? (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121513768133228445.html) that appeared online this morning.
Eric wrote me and mentioned that the ti' punch recipe shouldn't be 1 1/2 oz of sugar cane syrup. He's planning on a correction note next week.

I believe he was having the 4 year silver. I like it in a dry daiquiri, a lot.

I was a little surprised by that assessment of Flor de Cana 4 year old, but depending on the order in which they were tasted his palate may have been prejudiced. This wasn't a blind tasting but it does go to show that you need to taste spirits several times before you make a decision, a luxury few journalists have time to enjoy.

I'd bet Eric tasted the Flor either first or early on with in the round of items he was unimpressed with. After dabbling around with agricoles reverting back to a molasses based rum would probably taste like quite an improvement to one who is unfamiliar with or doesn't appreciate the lesser distorted flavors of agricultural rhum.
I didn't mean to sound critical - there's plenty of room for differing opinions - that's the beauty of this thing. Personally, I'd take La Flor Extra Dry over Tommy (which ever iteration) every day of the week.
