Just tried a new rum I never had before. Tanduay Superior 12 year old from the Phillipines. Yum! Smooth, not as sweet as Zacapa but similiar lack of burn. Excellent flavor. Has anyone else tried this rum?

In a previous life I lived in the Philippines and loved Tanduay rum. Distribution has been sketchy in the US but it's definitely worth trying if you can find it.

For SF Bay area folk, Winemax in Burlingame gets it and tries to have it in stock. That is where I bought my first bottle stateside. They also have another Phillipine rum. I'll check on the name. I first had the Tanduay in the PI while in the US Marines in Manilla.

Thanks rumdog007, we'll have to check it out. I suspect that you meant Weimax Wines & Spirits though, rather than Winemax.

Ive got a bottle of the Tanduay 1854, their 15 year old. Its a great rum! Medium bodied, nice complexities... I havent had it in a couple months, so I cant remember its flavor profile though.

I have been trying to locate this rum. Anyone know where to get this in Europe?
A coworker of mine is from the Philippines, and brought me back 2 small bottles from her last trip. Alas, they're the cheaper stuff, and after my Bundaberg adventure I'm a bit wary of dipping in to them.

Last time that I visited Weinmax, they only had the cheaper stuff. But, the owner is an affable chap and will get anything for which he has a current distributor. BTW, the cheaper, baseline, is pretty good, too.

I realize this is an older discussion chain, however I saw the topic and thought I'd add a few bits & pieces of information here.
Tanduay has some fantastic rums, or rhums, as they say, but these aren't easy to find outside the Philippines.
Tanduay 1854 Premium 15yo Rhum
Nose: Fairly strong "rum" aroma, banana, a hint of oak, soft vanilla-notes. Clean, non-chemical and light bouquet.
Taste: Very soft and smooth, light, if not a bit thin. Again banana notes and roasted sugar, but also some oaky notes and vanilla. Easy and pleasant.
Aftertaste: Medium-long, smoothly sugary, and carrying the fruity banana notes with it.
Comments: Very soft & smooth light style rum, light gold in colour. In my opinion far better a product than the Tanduay 12yo, which has a slightly chemical and oddly artificial flavour profile (even the colur of it is strangely orange in hue).
Tanduay 18v. Rhum (1,5 litre Barrel for tourist market)
Nose: Clearly a blend of older rums: Raisiny, with oak, vanilla, soft and sophisticated, with a hint of smoke. Truly pleasant and fine bouquet. A touch of banana.
Taste: Silky smooth, then a touch of warming sharpness that brings with it some raisiny notes. Not unlike a fine sherry-aged whisky, sophisticated and oaky to a point with a hint of smoke. XO-cognac-like deep fruity "rancio" notes, leathery, oak coming again. Glorious experience! There's a depth of flavour, and oaky notes are not bitter in any sense. Dry but not woody. Adding water brings out smoky notes and oiliness.
Aftertaste: Long and pleasant, interestingly versatile. The XO-Cognac-like dark fruity richness combines nicely with some oaky notes.
Comments: This is a fabulous rum, no doubt. Sadly I have never seen it selling anywhere outside of Philippines.
Tanduay also made a very limited edition 23yo single barrel rhum which was bottled in hand-painted 1 litre bottles; This is a fabulous rum and a few bottles still emerge for sale in Makati business district, Manila in Hallmark store on occasion. Even the Pope has a bottle, so it must be heavenly stuff indeed.http://www.ministryofrum.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif
Smile I have enjoyed this rum, and it is a beautiful masterpiece in its own right.

Minister Hamilton, you appear to have lived a most interesting life. You should probably start writing a biography...I'd read it.

i have had Tanduay on 2 occasions.
The first one: i was at a friends doing some recording and was offered a drink to lubricate the creative process. It was the Tanduay Primiero Ron Ocho Anos. i finished the bottle before i finished recording-- very nice stuff! {The bad thing was-- and i didn't know this until it was to late-- the bottle was a gift, given to my friends wife-- and i couldn't replace it because it was unavailable....
Tale #2: Fast forward a few years... i am working at Hi Time and i get a courteous and friendly invitation to watch a movie a my bosses house, in their back yard. Kieth offers me a drink and points to his cabinet-- low and behold Tanduay White, i pull it down with found memories, not expecting the 8, but hoping for something nice. . . i was not disappointed. On the rocks, i finished that bottle just after the movie {V for Vendetta great movie}, and was feeling a bit guilty because i cracked it brand new, and killed it that night-- Kieth didn't even get a taste.
i like Tanduay.

If you ever visit my house, remind me to HIDE THE RUM!:)
i usually come bearing gifts (as i did on both of these occasions.);
But being a sensitive guest i usually bring something the host prefers, not what i prefer-- that is how i got into their rums.

I just hope that you have more lucky with your delivery than I did recently.
A friend of mine came back from the Phillipines in the autumn. He rang me to triumphantly tell me that, as requested he had my bottle of 1854 for me and would hand it over when we next met. As a result i tucked into my existing bottle which I had been making last, thinking I now had another on its way. A few months later over the Christmas period my mate phoned to say he was travelling up to see me. But before he came he sheepishly had to admit that he had no Tanduay for me. It seems he and his wfe had a major row and afterwards both decided they were desperate for a drink. They had no booze in the house so guiltily tucked into my 1854. He couldn't have apologised more profusely as we drank my El Dorado 5 and ginger. After many of those I pulled out my Zacapa which we liberally sipped. I woke the next morning to find that not only did I have none of my cheapest rum (Tanduay 1854 costs about Ј5 in Phills.) but i was also very short of my most expensive - Zacapa.
To top it all I had also bought him a Pussers decanter for us to drink and celebrate as he was due to leave the British Navy. He accepted the decanter and then had to tell me that he had withdrawn his notice and was staying in the service for some more years. We agreed to keep the Pussers until then.
None of it matters because he is my closest friend. I may not get any replacement Zacapa but as he has family in the Phillippines and returns reasonably regularly I know I will get my Tanduay one day!

i found this forum because i was curious how the rest of the world feels about our much-loved tanduay...
so happy to see it is well-appreciated!
as i type, i am actually sipping from a bottle of the tanduay superior (12 yo). do the filipinos bathe in this stuff? well, we do in the 5-year old one most definitely :)
if any of you would want tanduay sent to you, send me a message, i could see if i can work something out. anything to continue to promote a product i am truly proud of :)

I love Tanduay 1854 soooo very much. I have two bottles and some Superior in the living room, and IMO it blows away any rum I've ever tried. I need some of the 18-yr and 23-yr old now. I'll be in Manila in September, so I'll go on a quest for the 23 out in Makati...haven't been to Makati since I was 14 or 15!

Tanduay Rhum has become my rum of choice. A fifth here is around $7.00 and it's a rare treat.
I have not had the pleasure of the more up-market Tanduay products, but the regular stuff is good enough.
I love it.
