I am interested in this one as well. I have been searching for a place that carries this and will ship to my state. I think my best bet is to order from Hi Time and have it shipped to my wife's uncle in CA and then have him ship it to me.

It's a wonderfully easy to drink rum, sweet start, rich flavor, smooth easy finish. It compares well with Zacapa 23 and Diplomatico RE.

I like it too. Plus a really entertaining bottle.

I love this rum. It does have similar traits to Ron Zacapa 23, and just like Zacapa, I suspect that it is a solera rum. I first Kissed this Costa Rican rum at the Ybor city Rum event in 2006. The guys importing the rums into the states didnt have much information regarding the production process of the rum, but they knew they had a great product on their hands. I'm hoping to bring some over here to the UK in the near future, as mines is nearly finished.
Great packaging as well....

Suddenly, I've seen this rum at many liquor stores in the past 18 months. IWS is distributing here in Florida (also Santa Teresa) and doing a good job. This is the pride of Costa Rica.

WOOHOO!!! I just found a place that will ship this to Delaware...I ordered a bottle of this and a bottle of Oronoco which I have heard nothing but good things about. Can't wait to try it.

A very rich, complex rum from Costa Rica. On the sweeter side. I prefer it after a heavy or spicy meal, and another good thing about it is that it can stand up to full bodied, stronger cigars.

I agree with all the positive comments on this one.

I just picked up a bottle this past weekend without knowing much about it - yes the packaging caught my eye. I think it was around $35.

As I always do, I opened it right when I got home for my wife and I try a little bit neat. Very nice. It was slightly sweet and rich with a little bit of burn on the attack, but a nice long finish. It would be good with a cigar.

I think it will be a decent replacement for the Zacapa 23 I can no longer find (and hope does not reappear at the rumored $50+ price tag).

This is a nice rum, but I find I prefer the Reserva or I think it is the Commemerative to this one. Much the same way I prefer the Diplomatico Reserva to the Exclusiva and the 15yr Zacapa to the 23yr. I have developed more of a liking to dryer tasting rums instead of the sweeter ones.

I'm as much a sucker for a leather covered bottle as anyone, who cares what's inside. But seriously, please do try the Centenario Conmemorativo - much more reasonable in price, and it is terrific...

To me, i would say it is slightly less complex than those 2 --SLIGHTLY, and still completely enjoyable.

By the way the lower end bottling's are real nice finds at decent prices (not great, mind you, but decent)
Ron Cent Anejo $14 (5 yr-ish w/ sugar added trying mimic the XX, a little uneven but fun.)
Ron Cent Commoritivo $17 (8yr-ish and dry,; this is totally different than the others, it is dry with spices an bold molasses flavor complexities, with an invigorate mouth finish...)

Now that is a depressing proposition. It's $38 at my local liquor store currently and after a bit of tasting, by no means an expert, it's the butteriest, warmest, most wonderful rum so far…

btw - There is no packaging - just the bottle with the braided band…

I consider this rum to be almost a dessert rum, and it is a good rum for a full bodied and full flavored cigar. Very rich with good complexity, but on the sweet side for sure.

If you really like the Z23, $38 is a decent price and the band is all the packaging you are going to get - as much as the RCXX has a nice outfit, it's really about what's inside the bottle, right?

Maybe speak to the liquor store owner about whether they won't be able to order more of it any time soon - the Z23 really has just disappeared from everywhere in NYC. If they tell you this is their last batch for a while, clean them out.

BTW - I am seeing more Z15 than ever lately, so the conspiracy theorist in me suspects a "new coke" ploy where they will bring back the Z23 with cheaper ingredients or some other change that they hope will go unnoticed because no one has tasted any in a while...

They have told me the Z23 is getting harder to get. Maybe it's time to make a run at it…

Z23 has disappeared from most shelves in South Florida, but I received two samples today of the new Solera 23 from Diageo. I'll try them tomorrow.

I still have stock of the original full weave basket and the recent 23 anos banded bottles to compare.

I recall recommending that my friends stock up on Zacapa for the past six months. You never know what change might bring.

The new bottle has some subtle differences:

I was in NYC this weekend and I saw the Zaccapa 23 at many places (the store on Booadway and Astor Place even had many bottles). I have also noticed that there was alot of the Z15 on the shelves.

Hi Robert,

have you tested the three Zacapa bottles? If yes, what did you find out? :)

Here is also a picture (http://www.refinedvices.com/forum_/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=174) of the new box it comes in. I don't suppose you'd want to sell one of those full weave basket bottles Robert? I've been dying to find one of those for my collection. I could buy one off from you in London in October.

Count, I would not be interested in parting with my original stock of Zacapa 23 from the 90s -- it's never coming back. There are still a few bottles out there. A friend called me up last week to say his buddy was offering an old Zacapa bottle with a full weave. It was given as a gift and he does not particularly like rum. I offered to come over and give a complete presentation on the brand history to partake in the blessed event, but the schedule would not allow.

The Bottle Count, or the Rum??

That is a shame Robert but I guess I wouldn't part from them either.

Forrest, both the bottle and rum :P. It is a shame they don't make these full weave bottles anymore, or the old rum for that matter. Would have loved to compare it to the newest blends.

Well frankly the rum was long gone before i let the bottles go, and they were my last empties... but i can keep an eye out for you if you like.

i am probably one of the very few who was glad to see the woven bottle go-- it is just such waste, and you cant tell when the damn thing is empty (by my 4th or 5th i 'started' to get the hang of it-- LAME).

i am usually annoy by packaging waste though sooo- what can i say. (i would much rather that they spend less on packaging and pass the savings onto us!)

Bump! I'd like to get people looking at this thread if I could, because I'd really like some information (or hell, just some opinions) about the Ron Centenario Fundacion 20.

I've had a bottle in my collection for about six months, I ordered it online and have been slowly working on it. I enjoy it, it has a nice viscous, full-bodied mouthfeel with sweet maple syrup, tobacco, and leathery flavors. It tastes similar to the Zacapa 23 as some in this thread have pointed out, though more sweet and less balanced.

I'm kind of stuck though about my feelings on this one because of the lack of information we all have about it. Nobody knows how it is made, the average age of the blend, or even if all the rum in the bottle is really from Costa Rica. The website the bottle advertises basically doesn't exist, and the description on the bottle is pretty much worthless. This rum is a goddamn mystery, but it is very tasty and so I wish I could recommend it to my friends to go with a good maduro cigar. Usually, when asked what is a great rum to try, I tell people El Dorado 15, Zacapa 23, Mount Gay XO, Cruzan Single Barrel, that stuff. I avoid mentioning this one because, though I like it, it's frankly a bit sketchy as to what the hell it even is.

Anyone care to engage in some conjecture?

Sources in Panama claim the origin of the rum is Panamanian. It's definitely bottled and probably matured in Costa Rica.

I like it and will try to have at least 1 bottle in the cupboard. Beyond liking it, so long as it tastes as good as it has & unless I find something suspicious or outrageously deceptive, I will continue to support the product through purchases.

But I understand your concern. The reality is there are a multitude of rum products that we could wonder out loud what the true origins and contents are.

I read somewhere that it is from Panama and aged in Costa Rica. I have a bottle of 20 yr and Reserva and prefer the Reserva to the 20 yr, though the 20yr has got to have one of the sexiest bottles around.

This bottle is also on the shelf at my local liquor store. I'm trying to decide between Ron Centenario Fundacion XX, Ron Millonario Solera 15, and Zafra 21.

I prefer well-balanced rums with concentrated flavors (venez/demerera, and dominican rums). Sweet rums (Zacapa, Zaya), and highly oaked whisky-style rums (Mt Gay Extra Old, Abuelo) are slightly less appealing. Anyone have any thoughts on this one?

Godd to know it can handle cigars. I smoke a lot of full bodied cubans. Found that Zacapa 23 is a good partner with my cigars

I only recently found this rum, I was given it in a bar in Hamburg Germany that I was dragged to once I said I was rum drinker (everyone expects a Scotsman to drink whisky).

The friend who introduced me to it then brought a bottle over to Scotland when she came to visit, it is currently hidden to prevent evaporation (evaporation always happens when I'm out & my Dad is in ??? ).

I really like this rum as it's a real contrast to the usual rumds we drink (Cockspur, Black Seal 80 proof, Havana cask Strength, Angasoura 1919) - with a more grass/herb flavour.

Unfortunately it's £50 a bottle in the only place I've found it over here, so I'll now go look for the Reserva or the commemorative as recommended earlier in the thread.
